Book Launch of “100 Years of Rugby” by Tadgh Dwyer

After falling victim to the damage at Holyhead Port, our shipment of books finally arrived to Thurles, and we were delighted to be able to launch the book at The Source Arts Centre on Sunday Dec 22nd .

The evening was opened by Thurles RFC President, Brian Scanlon who welcomed everyone to the Source on this, a very special night for Thurles Rugby Club. The book is a fantastic collection of over 500 photos and 500 pages of the History of Rugby in Thurles and its environs.

The book was officially launched on the evening by IRFU President Mr Declan Madden who spoke about the immense value to a club of having its entire history documented for all to enjoy. Declan complimented Tadgh on the enormous body of work involved since embarking on the journey to collate such a fine example of the history of Thurles Rugby Club. Declan was then presented with a copy of the book in which he himself features, having played in the 50th year anniversary game with Thurles v Garryowen.

The book’s author, Tadgh Dwyer then spoke to the large crowd about the process of gathering the information for the book. Tadgh spoke of the many many hours of research and the fantastic facilities at Thurles Library. He also spoke of sitting with past Players, Committee Members and Presidents to gather information, photos and stories of the long and varied history of the club. Tadgh thanked the Senior Committee of the club for support with the project, especially in the final few months. He also paid special tribute to Eamonn Shanahan of Pinstripe Productions, who edited and produced the book, and also curated the wonderful exhibition at the Source Gallery.

Brian Scanlon closed the evening by thanking everyone for coming out to show their support for the book just a few short days before Christmas. Brian also thanked Declan Madden for attending the re-arranged event, and taking time out from his hectic schedule to be there to launch the book, and wished him well for the 2025 season and 150 Year anniversary of the IRFU.

Special thanks was also paid to Jane Ryan and Aisling Scanlon for their tireless work to organise the event the event at the Source, and to Hugh Ryan and his team at Everything from Nothing, for the fantastic Podcast

Thurles RFC would also like to thank Hickeys Bar and Cooleeney Cheese for sponsoring the Wine and Cheese for the Reception. Also “Blas” Foods for the Charcuterie and “Grazing Table”.
