Dr. Larry O’Connor
Yesterday, we learned of the sad passing of a true stalwart of Thurles Rugby Club
Larry came to Thurles in 1958 to run the research section of the Sugar Factory, and straight on to the first team. He was Club Captain from 1960 to 1962 leading us a Garryowen Cup in 1962 (first one in 32 years) and played with us until 1967 mostly at Fullback. In 1966 his home Club Abbeyfeale requested his services in the Munster Junior Cup Final replay after their Fullback had got injured in the first match, he went on to have an excellent game and win a Munster Junior Cup medal. When he became Chairman of the Club 1966 to 1970. He oversaw the purchase of the field in Loughtagalla and the building of the dressing rooms. He became Trustee of the Club from 1987 until 2008.
Larry was one of life’s true Gentleman.
