Thurles: 38 - Charleville: 38
U16s Challange Match
22nd of December 2024

High winds, torrential showers and near freezing tempretures, would normal mean up the jumper rugby. But neither team let the weather effect them which led to a fantastic end to end game that included 12 tries.
Charleville took the lead after a few big carries from their forwards up the middle of the field result in a converted try. Thurles replied with a try from Daniel Groome (Captain), who from the base of a ruck, deep within our own 22 and ran in under the posts, Daniel converted. Charleville replied shortly after with another try this time missing the conversion tho. Thurles replied again through Oscar Ryan who touched down and Daniel Groome again converted. Charleville went over for another this time adding the extra 2.
Daniel Groome went on score two more tries before half time. To leave the score at 24-19 to thurles at the break.
As luck would have it, the strong wind that Thurles were playing against for the 1st half, vanished.  Charlevilles outside centre made the gain line plus some with every time he got the ball in his hands. A well worked move from charleville put him straight through for a certain try only for the work of Daniel Groome and Oscar Ryan who chased back and brought him down, unfortunately Daniel picked up a knock while making the tackle and had to be replaced. Dara Burke, who started at 15 slotted into 10 and Rogan Lyons filled in to full back. Charleville scored two un answered tries in quick succession. But vice-captain Paudie Kavanagh rallied the team, scoring a great individual try after picking from the back of a scrum he powered over the line with half of the opposition pack hanging out of him.
This left the score at 38-31 to Charleville with less than 5 minutes remaining. Big carries from Jason Carroll, Dom Gal and Luke Ryan, Daniel Delaney and Evan Connolly brought play into the charleville half the ball was moved out to Oscar Ryan on the wing who ran in for a second try, only for the ref to call play back for a knock on. Thurles kept the pressure on Charleville keeping them deep within their own 22. When they went for a clearance kick from behind their own tryline, miraclesly the wind (that went missing for 30 minutes)  floated the ball into the hands of Finn Green who only had to catch the ball and touch it down.
Dara Bourke converted to level the game to the delight of all 5 travelling supporters. Well done to all the players today. There has been a big improvement since our first game in September.
Many thanks to Charleville for hosting.
