On Sunday last the women's team travelled to Bruff for their Open cup clash .
For their first game of 2025
after the Xmas break it was a tough encounter .
14 of our finest ladies took on a squad of 21 over 80 minutes on a full pitch .
Thurles opened the score through Katelyn only after a few minutes which was converted by Eimer to establish a 7 nil lead .
Shortly after Bruff levelled and added a second unconverted try to lead by 12 to 7 after 10 minutes .
This tempo continued with Thurles scoring again through Gemma and converted to go ahead plus a third try shortly after to lead 19 / 12 .
Emma needed to leave the field after a number of heavy hits and tackles took their toll .
For the next 20 minutes we played 13 against their full compliment plus subs before Emma returned to play some 5 minutes before half time .
At that stage scores were 22 / 21 in Bruff's favour which took us to half time .
The 2nd half followed on with plenty of running rugby but with little reward for either side .
Thurles went ahead once more through a try from Gemma converted by Eimer to push the lead out to six but Bruff were to have their purple patch scoring 4 unconverted tries thereafter .
With time running out Thurles rallied once more and scored again through Kate Kelly with Eimer adding the 2 points once more .
Final score
Bruff 44 Thurles 33 .
For Thurles it was huge effort and performance under the circumstances and to round it off at the death to score once more emphasizes the never say die attitude of our ladies .
Like the old saying of "You win or you learn " we are still learning and the next win is within touching distance with a few adjustments to our game .
We had a player of the match performance from Ciara Scanlon and 4 separate try scorers Katelyn , Gemma (2) Eimer and Kate with Eimer converting 4 of them to hit a season best of 80% off the tee .
Today's loss puts us through to the bowl competition , we now wait for our opponents after the next round is played .
Our next outing in a neutral venue is against Clonakilty in the Division 2 Cup replay on 9th of Feb .
All support welcome on the day and very much appreciated .
