Pan Munster Cup U14 Boys
Thurles v Garryowen
Thurles kicked off the last round of the pan Munster cup against Garryowen Sunday morning in Thurles. Garryowen landed in Thurles with only one defeat in the cup so far and that was a 5-0 loss to a very strong Bruff team, so confidence was high with the limerick giants. From the kick off Charlie long set the tone with a big hit on the scrum half and that settled Thurles into it straight away. Garryowen ran the ball out the backs as much as possible but were met with solid defending all over the field. Thurles were giving as good as they were getting with some nice passing of their own almost put James Maher away only for a last stitch tackle from Garryowen to keep it nil all. Thurles had a line out on the 22 and a short line out move got Charlie long Up to the 5-meter line with The Garryowen defence on the back foot they were very luck not to concede a try. With 5 minutes left in the half the Garryowen backs kick into gear and scored a try out wide and missed the conversion to leave 5-0 to Garryowen at the break. In the second half Garryowen made some changes and brought in some heavy hitters with ball in hand. Garryowen got a rub of the green when a short line out move didn’t go 5 and the were allowed run the ball and score their second try to make it 10-0 with the extras missed. Thurles we’re still in it and we’re unlucky out on the right wing with a missed timed pass. Garryowen got in-for the last try of the game when some tired Thurles bodies slipped off a tackle and this time the try was converted to leave it 17-0 in favour of the travelling team. This was one of the best performances from the under 14s this year who were full of heart and a never say die attitude. Cup rugby is no joke, and the boys can be very proud of themselves playing in the top tier of Youth Rugby and coping very well with calibre of teams they are being matched up with. The Boys and their Coaches are a credit to Thurles RFC and will have the club in good stead for the future.
