We lost a great friend this week and Thurles lost one of it's greatest characters ever. David O'Sullivan was known to everyone and loved by all. The three things that defined Sully were his family, his music and Thurles RFC. His love for Josephine, his mother Noeleen, Chloe and his adored grandchildren brought him endless joy. The music that ran through his veins made him passionate about the local music scene. He was responsible for many the great gig in the town such as Féile Beag which will never be the same again.
Last but not least was his place in Thurles Rugby Club. A club man through and through, he played underage and senior with great success. One of Sully’s earliest Senior games was against Clonmel as a 17 year old when he gave an exhibition to guide Thurles home with a 23 points to 16 win over Clonmel in Thurles’ defense of the Garryowen Cup, as far back as 1980
After his playing career he became very active in the coaching aspect of the club through all the age grades up to the present where he helped coach our senior women to two munster finals this year.
Sully was always around the club, for few bars of Leroy Brown or kicking for touch in the early days to being on the sideline as a coach and as a proud granddad while Kaylee May was “giving it a try” over the last few weeks. Whenever he was around he always had a smile and was up for a chat. I’m sure Mickey The Twin wasn’t expecting to see his old half back partner quite so soon, but our loss is Heaven’s gain. Rest easy buddy. We will all miss you
